MoMA shows contemporary Latin American art

Chosen Memories

A single gift from Trustee Patricia Phelps de Cisneros moves the Museum of Modern Art in New York to give a stage to the last four decades of Latin American history beginning April 30. Chosen Memories uses contemporary art as a mouthpiece for the past.

»History is a living organism,« finds Brazilian artist Rosângela Rennó, one of the 40 Latin Americans who will occupy the 3rd floor of the Museum of Modern Art in New York beginning April 30. For all of them, the history of their native country and continent served as source material. In the exhibition of the same name, selected memories, Chosen Memories, tell of the reappraisal of colonialism, misunderstood cultural heritage, and relationships of kinship and belonging on a continent. They tell visitors about the past four decades and make the present a bit more accessible to them.

Contemporary works from MoMA's collection then dialogue with a major gift from Trustee Patricia Phelps de Cisneros that carries the event. Packaged in videos, photographs, paintings and sculptures is the Latin American story. Among the selected artists are Rennó, Alejandro Cesarco (Uruguay), Regina José Galindo (Guatemala) and Mario García Torres (Mexico). Chosen Memories Contemporary Latin American Art - from the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Gift and Beyond runs through September 9.Art.Salon

Till Schermer

Is our personality just an illusion? Till Schermer's paintings open up a new perspective on the fragmented human psyche. In intense, sometimes disturbing images, the artist presents the protagonists of our mental society - perhaps the start of an adventure for one's own mind.
