NOTE: A native of Yixian, Anhui province, Xu Shiqi graduated from the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and previously studied abroad at the École des Beaux-Arts. Apart from being an educator at Nanjing Central University and Nanjing Normal University, Xu was a painter and calligrapher who was particularly skilled at flower-and-bird as well as landscape paintings.

This price was achieved in the auction Exquisite Eye: Chinese Paintings Online at Christies in Hong Kong and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of HKD 12,000.00 many times over. This high result makes Eagle / Calligraphy the most expensive artwork by Xu Shiqi that we have observed at auctions so far.
