Geological Map of Durham; on which are delinieated, by colours, the courses and width of the strata. London: G. and J. Cary, 1 March, 1824. Hand-coloured engraved folding linen-backed map (512 x 596mm) in 15 sections, verso of two sections with card to match accompanying original card slipcase, this with printed paper labels to upper and right hand sides as issued. (Verso of map with some minor spotting, slipcase rubbed at extremities and joints splitting but firm.)
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE; A SUPERB HAND-COLOURED GEOLOGICAL COUNTY MAP BY THE FOUNDER OF ENGLISH GEOLOGY showing the geological strata including the great coal fields of County Durham. 'One of the greatest figures of the nineteenth century' (Tooley), Smith produced the first geological map, with twenty-one of his county maps being published between 1819 and 1824. His work in the field was recognised in 1831 when he became the first recipient of the Geological Society of London's Wollaston Medal. Eyers 33; cf. PMM 274; Tooley Maps and Mapmakers, p.58; cf. It achieved a price of GBP 4,500.00 (€ 5,310.26), exceeding the upper end of the estimate range by 50%. Admittedly, works by William Smith have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work A pack of foxhounds on a bank above a rocky gorge in December 2008 with an auction result of USD 41,250.00 (€ 29,635.75).

Hand-coloured engraved folding linen-backed map (512 x 596mm) in 15 sections, verso of two sections with card to ma von William Smith kam im April 2013 bei Christies in London zur Auktion. Sie erzielte dabei einen Preis von GBP 4.500,00 (€ 5.310,26) und übertraf damit das obere Ende der Schätzpreisspanne um 50%. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von William Smith auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit A pack of foxhounds on a bank above a rocky gorge im Dezember 2008 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 41.250,00 (€ 29.635,75).
