Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait Of A Lady, Three-Quarter Length, With A View Of Prestonfield House, Midlothian by William Smellie Watson was auctioned at Christies in New York in February 2013, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 3,000.00 – 5,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 2,125.00 (€ 1,624.74). Admittedly, works by William Smellie Watson have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of a Lady by Prestonfield House, Midlothian in April 2002 with an auction result of USD 6,462.50 (€ 7,178.96).
