In September 2002 Christies in London held the auction British and Victorian Pictures, which included the work Portrait of General Sir Arthur Clifton, K.C.B., K.C.H., full-length, in uniform, holding a plumed hat in his right hand and a sword in his left, in a landscape by Walter Salter. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 4,700.00 (€ 7,469.38), 18% above the upper estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Walter Salter - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work The Waterloo Banquet, 1836, which sold at auction in October 2005 for GBP 13,200.00 (€ 19,466.01).
