Auction result well in line with expectations
In May 2007 Christies in London held the auction Maritime & Naval Battles (Pictures), which included the work Frigates riding out the gale (illustrated); and French fishing boats in coastal waters by William McAlpine. The price achieved of GBP 1,080.00 (€ 1,589.29) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 800.00 – 1,200.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by William McAlpine - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Men-o-war returning from battle, which sold at auction in March 2001 for GBP 3,290.00 (€ 5,308.74).
