Auction result well in line with expectations
In December 2008 Sothebys in London held the auction Early British & Irish Paintings, which included the work Portrait Of King Charles I by William Dobson. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 200,000.00 – 300,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 217,250.00 (€ 228,175.71) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by William Dobson - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as Lucius Cary, 2nd Viscount Falkland (c. 1610-1643), half-length, in black, which sold at auction in July 2018 for GBP 440,750.00 (€ 494,177.67).
