Artwork auctioned at six times the upper estimate price
When the work A Young Gentleman, In Black Doublet With White Lawn Collar And Tassels, Shoulder-Length Fair Hair, Moustache And Small Pointed Beard by William Dobson was auctioned at Christies in London in June 2007, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 1,500.00 but the actual price achieved was more than six times as high at GBP 9,000.00 (€ 13,355.55). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by William Dobson achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as Lucius Cary, 2nd Viscount Falkland (c. 1610-1643), half-length, in black in July 2018 with an auction result of GBP 440,750.00 (€ 494,177.67).
