WANG SHOUPANG (1875-1929) Seven-character Calligraphic Couplet in Running Script A pair of hanging scrolls, ink on paper Each scroll measures 135 x 32.5 cm. (53 1 ⁄ 8 x 12 3 ⁄ 4 in.) Inscribed and signed, with two seals of the artist Dedicated to Shengfu Further inscribed and signed by Lee Ao (1935-2018), with two seals NOTE: Wang Shoupang, also known as Ci Jian, is native to Weifang, Shandong Province. During the Guangxu period, he worked at Hanlin Yuan, and taught at Yi Xueguan. He accompanied Zaize, Ruifang, and three other ministers to Japan, where they observed the politics, education, and business. When Wang returned to China, he advocated for education and business reforms. Wang was well-known for his calligraphy; one would feel proud to even own a piece of paper with a word written by him.

The work Seven-character Calligraphic Couplet in Running Script by Wang Shoupeng was sold in the Summer Reverie: Chinese Paintings Online auction at Christies in New York in August this year. It achieved a price of HKD 50,400.00 (€ 5,928.59), exceeding the upper end of the estimate range by 68%. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Wang Shoupeng; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Calligraphy sold at auction in April this year with the realized price of HKD 9,600.00 (€ 9,803.48).

Die Arbeit Seven-character Calligraphic Couplet in Running Script von Wang Shoupeng wurde im August diesen Jahres in der Auktion Summer Reverie: Chinese Paintings Online bei Christies in New York versteigert. Sie erzielte dabei einen Preis von HKD 50.400,00 (€ 5.928,59) und übertraf damit das obere Ende der Schätzpreisspanne um 68%. Trotz des guten Ergebnisses ist dies nicht der höchste Zuschlag für ein Kunstwerk von Wang Shoupeng; den erzielte unter den von uns beobachteten Auktionen die Arbeit Calligraphy im April diesen Jahres mit dem Hammerpreis von HKD 9.600,00 (€ 9.803,48).
