Oblong 4 o (151 x 196 mm). Verses in Latin, Dutch and French. Woodcut device on title, one full-page engraved emblematic illustration, 124 engraved emblems each within an oval woodcut frame, all by C. Boel and WITH EARLY HAND-COLORING. (Some minor repairs and staining.) 19th-century red morocco gilt by Niedree, edges gilt. Provenance: acquired from John Landwehr, 1976.
FIRST EDITION of the Dutch version. The charming engravings show Cupids encountering the various trials of Love. Van Veen published four polyglot versions simultaneously (see following lot for the English edition). Landwehr, Low Countries 825; Praz, p.524-525; de Vries 45; Princeton 755. Fact and Fantasy 50.

Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Otto van Veen achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work The Capture of Rome in July 2018 with an auction result of GBP 728,750.00 (€ 817,088.99).
