A hanging scroll in ink, color, and gold of the protagonist of the parody of the Kabuki play Shibaraku, which features a female in the role of Kamakura Gongorō Kagemasa, wearing the costume traditional to the male role which features the design known as Sanshō, the three squares symbol of Ichikawa Danjuro's acting family but with a female kimono under the topmost robe, standing below a flowering prunus tree brushed in ink wash with green, gold, and brown pigment added in tarashikomi dripping; signed Utagawa Kunisada ga and sealed Hōsai

A top price for Utagawa Toyokuni V
The work Onna Shibaraku by Utagawa Toyokuni V was sold in the Iron and InkPrints and Paintings, featuring Tetsubin from the Crawford Collection auction at Bonhams in New York in July last year. Here, the upper estimate of USD 800.00 was slightly exceeded - the artwork found a new owner for USD 828.75 (€ 812.34). With this result, Onna Shibaraku is even the most expensive work of art by Utagawa Toyokuni V that we have observed at auctions so far.
