Edo period (1615-1868), circa 1840
A shikishiban surimono print of Musashi sono yon (No.4: Musashi Province) from the series Mutamagawa (The Six Jewel Rivers), depicting a woman standing on a rock washing clothes with her feet in the Tama River in Chofu, Musashi Province, the poem by Seiyu Shujin, signed Gokotei with a toshidama seal; mounted on card. 19.5cm x 18cm (7 5/8in x 7 1/16in).

Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Utagawa Sadakage I achieved an unexpectedly high price at Bonhams in London in May this year. In the From Harunobu to Hasui | Japanese Prints across the centuries auction, the work Musashi sono yon sold for GBP 5,120.00 (€ 5,957.15) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 2,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Utagawa Sadakage I; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot A courtesan styling her hair in front of a mirror sold at auction in July 2018 with the realized price of GBP 6,250.00 (€ 7,007.62).
Oberer Schätzpreis um mehr als 100% übertroffen
Dieses Kunstwerk von Utagawa Sadakage I erzielte im Mai diesen Jahres bei Bonhams in London einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion From Harunobu to Hasui | Japanese Prints across the centuries wurde die Arbeit Musashi sono yon für GBP 5.120,00 (€ 5.957,15) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von GBP 2.000,00. Trotz des guten Ergebnisses ist dies nicht der höchste Zuschlag für ein Kunstwerk von Utagawa Sadakage I; den erzielte unter den von uns beobachteten Auktionen die Arbeit A courtesan styling her hair in front of a mirror im Juli 2018 mit dem Hammerpreis von GBP 6.250,00 (€ 7.007,62).
