Description
TSUCHIYA KOITSU (1870-1949)
Showa era (1926-1989), circa 1950s
Two oban tate-e prints from the series Tokyo fukei (Tokyo Views); the first titled Nezu jinja (Snow at Nezu Shrine), dated Showa kyunen junigatsu saku (Work of December Showa 9 [1934]), 39.7cm x 26.5cm (15 5/8in x 10 7/16in); the second titled Benkeibashi (Benkei Bridge), dated Showa hachinen shigatsu no saku (Works of April Showa 8 [1933]), 39.4cm x 26.1cm (15½in X 10 5/16in); both published by Doi Hangaten with a Hanken shoyu Doihangaten seal above the printer's seal Suri Yokoi and engraver's seal Hori Harada along the lower left margin; both signed Koitsu with seal Sin; both probably printed in the 1950s from somewhat recut blocks. Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
When the work Showa era (1926-1989), circa 1950s by Tsuchiya Koitsu was auctioned at Bonhams in London in November last year, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 600.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at GBP 1,912.50 (€ 2,216.15). However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Tsuchiya Koitsu - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Unknown, which sold at auction in September last year for USD 6,375.00 (€ 6,516.41).
