This artwork by The Monogrammist IS achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in January 2005. In the IMPORTANT OLD MASTER PAINTINGS PART I auction, the work A scholar holding a book sold for USD 441,600.00 (€ 338,416.74) - well above the upper estimate of USD 160,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by The Monogrammist IS; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Portrait Of An Elderly Woman, Looking Left sold at auction in December 2010 with the realized price of GBP 577,250.00 (€ 669,608.26).
