Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work The Meeting Of Alexander The Great And Roxana, Behind A Trompe-L'Oeil Curtain by Pietro Antonio Rotari was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in January 2016, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 150,000.00 – 200,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 125,000.00 (€ 115,398.82). Other works by Pietro Antonio Rotari have also sold for higher prices; the highest price we have seen at auction so far was achieved in January 2003 by the work A young girl hiding behind a muff at USD 152,500.00 (€ 142,005.77).
