Artwork auctioned at five times the upper estimate price
When the work The triumph of a ruler in the streets of a city by Peter de Kempeneer was auctioned at Christies in New York in January 2002, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - USD 15,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than five times as high at USD 82,250.00 (€ 95,706.31). Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Peter de Kempeneer; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Figures unearthing a corpse, with other figures in the background, a city beyond sold at auction in January 2002 with the realized price of USD 88,125.00 (€ 102,542.47).
