Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Man Ray achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in May last year. In the The Surrealist World of Rosalind Gersten Jacobs and Melvin Jacobs auction, the work Chess set sold for USD 31,500.00 (€ 29,354.21) - well above the upper estimate of USD 15,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Man Ray achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Le Violon d'Ingres, 1924 in May last year with an auction result of USD 12,412,500.00 (€ 11,566,955.55).
