The experience of Lee Chun-yi exemplifies the story of the Chinese diaspora of the 20th century. Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Lee’s family moved to Hong Kong when he was five years old. He pursued his graduate studies in the United States before returning to Taiwan to teach and embark on an artistic career. Lee’s formative years, spent in Hong Kong, saw him study art under Liu Kuo-sung at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His painting method, much inspired by Liu, departs from an artist’s
Lee Chun-yi’s works convey his cultural identity as a cosmopolitan Taiwanese artist. Although principally ethnically Chinese, Taiwan’s local culture is heavily influenced by Mainland China, Japan and the West. Lee’s works often resonate with theories of post-colonialism and demand expressions of a unique identity that appropriate the struggles of a society to find its own image. The title of the current work comes from an ancient poem “The Quatrain of Seven Steps” in which the poet Cao

Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Same Root by Li Junyi was sold in the Chinese Contemporary Ink auction at Christies in Hong Kong in November 2015. It changed hands for a price of HKD 437,500.00 (€ 53,434.48) achieving a result in the upper range of the estimate price range of HKD 350,000.00 – 450,000.00. Other works by Li Junyi have already achieved higher auction prices, for example, in November 2016 the work Mao Triptych: Wan Sui, Wan Shui, Wan Wan Sui was auctioned for HKD 562,500.00 (€ 68,544.38).
Auktionsergebnis im Rahmen der Erwartungen
Die Arbeit Same Root von Li Junyi wurde im November 2015 in der Auktion Chinese Contemporary Ink bei Christies in Hong Kong versteigert. Dabei wechselte sie für einen Preis von HKD 437.500,00 (€ 53.434,48) den Besitzer und erzielte damit ein Ergebnis im oberen Bereich der Schätzpreisspanne von HKD 350.000,00 – 450.000,00. Andere Arbeiten von Li Junyi konnten bereits höhere Auktionspreise erzielen, so wurde im November 2016 die Arbeit Mao Triptych: Wan Sui, Wan Shui, Wan Wan Sui für HKD 562.500,00 (€ 68.544,38) versteigert.
