Artwork auctioned at five times the upper estimate price
When the work The pediment of a Doric building amid dense vegetation; and A study for the same by Karl Friedrich Schinkel was auctioned at Christies in New York in January 2003, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - USD 10,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than five times as high at USD 50,190.00 (€ 46,736.20). Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Karl Friedrich Schinkel; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot A design for a new stairwell for the North façade of the Schloss at Stettin, with a subsidiary study of the loggia, a cross-section of the façade, and an engaged pilaster sold at auction in January 2002 with the realized price of USD 76,375.00 (€ 88,870.14).
Trotz des guten Ergebnisses ist dies nicht der höchste Zuschlag für ein Kunstwerk von Karl Friedrich Schinkel; den erzielte unter den von uns beobachteten Auktionen die Arbeit A design for a new stairwell for the North façade of the Schloss at Stettin, with a subsidiary study of the loggia, a cross-section of the façade, and an engaged pilaster im Januar 2002 mit dem Hammerpreis von USD 76.375,00 (€ 88.870,14).
