This artwork by José Vital Branco Malhoa achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in November 2008. In the European Paintings including The Orientalist Sale, Symbolism and the Poetic Vision and Spanish Painting auction, the work Portuguese O Barbeiro Da Aldeia (A Close Shave) sold for GBP 229,250.00 (€ 277,180.48) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 120,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by José Vital Branco Malhoa; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Jóvenes músicos (The young musicians) sold at auction in June 2007 with the realized price of GBP 356,000.00 (€ 528,286.09).
