with a copy of Albert Hastings Markham's A Whaling Cruise to Baffin's Bay and the Gulf of Boothia (London: 1874), the front free endpaper inscribed 'This Book and the Painting, by Ward, of the Northern Whale Fishery given to John Gordon Talbot Hassell, on his return home after an absence of Eleven Years - nine of which in Hong Kong, whence he is again about to proceed, by his Father J.T. Hassell Kingston upon Hull February 1875 the Painting and the Book always to accompany each other into whose possession they may ever come', and with a painted silhouette (4½ x 2 7/8in.) of Captain Sir John Ross inserted between the front free endpaper and title page, the silhouette inscribed '1834? or 33? Captain Ross taken at the Luncheon given to him at the Vittoria Hotel on his arrival at Hull on his return to England from the Arctic Voyage' on the reverse (2)
