Label pasted to top reverse inscribed "Presented to John Tayloe by his Affec'e Mother Maria Tayloe". A label printed "JOHN TAYLOE." with lozenge border affixed below. Possibly refer to Maria (Forrest) Tayloe Bohrer (1799-1870) of Rosedale, the Uriah Forrest House in Washington, DC, and to her son, John Tayloe V (1818-73), of Culpepper, Virginia.

Auction result well in line with expectations
In August this year Bonhams in Skinner Marlborough, Massachusetts held the auction August Americana | Bonhams Skinner, which included the work Sketch of a Continental Officer Sight by John Trumbull. The price achieved of USD 10,880.00 (€ 10,037.83) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as USD 8,000.00 – 15,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by John Trumbull achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work George Washington in May last year with an auction result of USD 1,620,000.00 (€ 1,509,644.95).

Im August diesen Jahres führte Bonhams in Skinner Marlborough, Massachusetts die Auktion August Americana | Bonhams Skinner durch, in der auch die Arbeit Sketch of a Continental Officer Sight von John Trumbull zur Versteigerung kam. Der dabei erzielte Preis von USD 10.880,00 (€ 10.037,83) lag im Rahmen der Erwartungen – die Schätzpreisspanne war von dem Auktionshaus zuvor mit USD 8.000,00 – 15.000,00 angegeben worden. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von John Trumbull erzielen.
