FIRST EDITION, 2 original parts, folio (560 x 380mm.), 30 hand-coloured lithographed plates by H.C. Richter, printed by C. Hullmandel, original cloth-backed printed boards, occasional spotting
Gould intended this work to comprise three parts but it was never completed, and therefore no proper title-page or preliminaries were produced. Gould reprinted unchanged thirteen of the thirty plates in The Mammals of Australia (see lot 92), two other plates had small changes, but the remaining fifteen kangaroo plates were totally revised. He once described them as ''a most remarkable tribe of quadrupeds, many possessing extreme beauty''.

The work A monograph of the Macropodidae, or family of kangaroos, 1841-1842, 2 volumes by John Gould was auctioned at Sothebys in London in May last year. It achieved a price of GBP 20,160.00 (€ 23,716.32), exceeding the upper end of the estimate range by 34%. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by John Gould achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work The Birds of Australia, [1840- 1848-1869, 8 volumes including Supplement|AID711784] in May last year with an auction result of GBP 302,400.00 (€ 355,744.81).

Die Arbeit A monograph of the Macropodidae, or family of kangaroos, 1841-1842, 2 volumes von John Gould kam im Mai letzten Jahres bei Sothebys in London zur Auktion. Sie erzielte dabei einen Preis von GBP 20.160,00 (€ 23.716,32) und übertraf damit das obere Ende der Schätzpreisspanne um 34%. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von John Gould erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit The Birds of Australia, [1840- 1848-1869, 8 volumes including Supplement|AID711784] im Mai letzten Jahres mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 302.400,00 (€ 355.744,81).
