Upper estimated price slightly exceeded
In April 2012 Christies in London held the auction Travel, Science and Natural History, which included the work Bourcieria Fulgidigula; Spathura Underwoodi; Eucephala Smaragdocaerulea; Spathura Rufocaligata; Lophornis Ornatus; Calliphlox Amethystina; Eriocnemis Alinae; Cometes? Caroli; Adelomyia Floriceps; Lampornis Porphyrurus; and Trochilus Polytmus by John Gould. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 2,375.00 (€ 2,912.87), 19% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by John Gould achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work The Birds of Australia, [1840- 1848-1869, 8 volumes including Supplement|AID711784] in May last year with an auction result of GBP 302,400.00 (€ 355,744.81).
