This artwork by John Atkinson Grimshaw achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in October last year. In the The Ann & Gordon Getty Collection: Volume 2 |Old Master, 19th and 20th Century Paintings, Day Sale auction, the work Midsummer Night Or Iris sold for USD 680,400.00 (€ 684,920.48) - well above the upper estimate of USD 250,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by John Atkinson Grimshaw; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Liverpool Custom House And Wapping sold at auction in December 2006 with the realized price of GBP 612,800.00 (€ 909,471.91).
