engraving, 1561, on two joined sheets of laid paper (as usual), without watermark, a fine impression of this large print in the very rare first state (of three), with thread margins, trimmed on the platemark in places, two tiny backed holes near the left sheet edge, a couple of short nicks and tears at the upper sheet edge, some minor, pale brown staining along a vertical fold at centre right, along the joint of the sheets and elsewhere, generally in very good condition

In December 2019 Christies in London held the auction Old Master Prints, which included the work The Massacre of the Innocents by Giovanni Battista Cavalieri. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 10,000.00 (€ 11,818.83), 67% above the upper estimate. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Giovanni Battista Cavalieri; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot OPERA nelaquale vie molti mostri de tutte le parti del mondo antichi et moderni con le dechiarationi a ciascheduno fine al presento anno 1585. Rome: by the author, 1585. sold at auction in April 2013 with the realized price of USD 20,000.00 (€ 15,188.34).
Oberer Schätzpreis um 67 % übertroffen
Im Dezember 2019 führte Christies in London die Auktion Old Master Prints durch, in der auch die Arbeit The Massacre of the Innocents von Giovanni Battista Cavalieri zur Versteigerung kam. Das »Bietergefecht« endete beim Preis von GBP 10.000,00 (€ 11.818,83) und damit 67% über dem oberen Schätzpreis. Trotz des guten Ergebnisses ist dies nicht der höchste Zuschlag für ein Kunstwerk von Giovanni Battista Cavalieri; den erzielte unter den von uns beobachteten Auktionen die Arbeit OPERA nelaquale vie molti mostri de tutte le parti del mondo antichi et moderni con le dechiarationi a ciascheduno fine al presento anno 1585.
