Within Long Drawn Out Trip, Scarfe notes that: "...Cameron Mackintosh rang me out of the blue, asking me to animate a sequence for the touring production of Miss Saigon. He knew about my work in Vietnam during the war and thought I would understand the show... Cameron was exploding with enthusiam and ideas when he came to my house to discuss the project..."
