Description
FRANZ VON BAYROS (AUSTRIAN, 1866-1924) Ode to Dante (recto); and A knight before a vision of Christ (verso) signed 'Bayros' (lower right, recto); and signed, inscribed and dated 'Bayros/7 VI 1920/Zeil' (verso) pencil, watercolour and black ink heightened with gold on card (recto); and pencil on card (verso) 16 1 ⁄ 8 x 13 3 ⁄ 4 in. (41 x 35 cm.) Executed in 1920.

In July last year Christies in London held the auction The Isabel Goldsmith Collection: Selected Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist Art, which included the work Ode to Dante (recto); and A knight before a vision of Christ (verso) by Franz von Bayros. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 18,900.00 (€ 22,569.96), 58% above the upper estimate. This high result makes Ode to Dante (recto); and A knight before a vision of Christ (verso) the most expensive artwork by Franz von Bayros that we have observed at auctions so far.
