This price was achieved in the auction The Sleep of Reason: Francisco Goya’s Los Caprichos at Christies in New York and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of USD 25,000.00 many times over. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Francisco de Goya achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Doña María Vicenta Barruso Valdés, seated on a sofa with a lap-dog; and Portrait of her mother Doña Leonora Antonia Valdés de Barruso, seated on a chair holding a fan in January this year with an auction result of USD 16,420,000.00 (€ 15,122,490.33).
