A top price for Francisco de Goya - as previously expected
In January this year Christies in New York held the auction Old Masters, which included the work Portrait of Doña María Vicenta Barruso Valdés, seated on a sofa with a lap-dog; and Portrait of her mother Doña Leonora Antonia Valdés de Barruso, seated on a chair holding a fan by Francisco de Goya. The price achieved of USD 16,420,000.00 (€ 15,122,490.33) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as USD 15,000,000.00 – 20,000,000.00. Even if this result could not surprise positively, Portrait of Doña María Vicenta Barruso Valdés, seated on a sofa with a lap-dog; and Portrait of her mother Doña Leonora Antonia Valdés de Barruso, seated on a chair holding a fan is the most expensive artwork by Francisco de Goya that we have observed at auctions so far.
