Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait of a gentleman, half-length, in a black coat and waistcoat, with a white stock by Francis William Wilkin was auctioned at Christies in London in July 2011, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 1,000.00 – 1,500.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 875.00 (€ 1,004.19). However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Francis William Wilkin - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of General Don Miguel Alava, K.C.B., (1771-1843), half-length, wearing the Waterloo medal, which sold at auction in May 2014 for GBP 2,375.00 (€ 2,918.95).
