FIRST EDITION, 4to (285 x 220mm.), woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, hand-coloured engraved frontispiece, 53 engraved plates numbered 1-53 (numbers 1-46 hand-coloured, with plate 35bis, and no plate numbered 52), contemporary mottled calf gilt (plausibly by John Brindley), spine gilt in compartments, lacking list of subscribers, joints starting to crack
A fine copy of Albin's extensive treatise on British spiders, based on Joseph Dandridge's unpublished work, complemented by Robert Hooke's observations on the Carter spider, the jumping spider, the flea and various lice, and Richard Mead on the tarantula and the scorpion. The frontispiece incorporates a portrait of the author on horseback.

This artwork by Eleazar Albin achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in May last year. In the The Library of Henry Rogers Broughton, 2nd Baron Fairhaven Part I auction, the work A natural history of spiders, and other curious insects, 1736, contemporary calf gilt sold for GBP 1,890.00 (€ 2,223.41) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 800.00. Admittedly, works by Eleazar Albin have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work A natural history of birds [and A natural history of English insects, 1738-1749, 4 volumes, contemporary calf|AID711744] in May last year with an auction result of GBP 12,600.00 (€ 14,822.70).
