FIRST EDITION, folio (383 x 275 mm.), 57 hand-coloured lithographed plates by and after J.G. Keulemans and 3 uncoloured plates, red half morocco by Zaehnsdorf, spine with raised bands in six compartments, top edge gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers, extremities lightly bumped
A most attractive copy of this ornithological treatise. Elliot cites their peculiar appearance and extraordinary characters among the reasons for choosing the hornbills for this, his fifth and last illustrated monograph. Plate 44, although called for in the list of plates, was never issued.

In May last year Sothebys in London held the auction The Library of Henry Rogers Broughton, 2nd Baron Fairhaven Part I, which included the work A monograph of the bucerotidae, or family of hornbills, 1876- 1882 by Daniel Giraud Elliot. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 13,860.00 (€ 16,304.97), 73% above the upper estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Daniel Giraud Elliot - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work A monograph of the paradiseidae, or family of birds of paradise, 1873, which sold at auction in May last year for GBP 40,320.00 (€ 47,432.64).

Im Mai letzten Jahres führte Sothebys in London die Auktion The Library of Henry Rogers Broughton, 2nd Baron Fairhaven Part I durch, in der auch die Arbeit A monograph of the bucerotidae, or family of hornbills, 1876- 1882 von Daniel Giraud Elliot zur Versteigerung kam. Das »Bietergefecht« endete beim Preis von GBP 13.860,00 (€ 16.304,97) und damit 73% über dem oberen Schätzpreis. Für andere Arbeiten von Daniel Giraud Elliot mussten die Käufer allerdings auch schon deutlich tiefer in die Tasche greifen – das bisher höchste Auktionsergebnis haben wir für die Arbeit A monograph of the paradiseidae, or family of birds of paradise, 1873 beobachtet, die im Mai letzten Jahres für GBP 40.320,00 (€ 47.432,64) versteigert wurde.
