Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
When the work Studies of six artists and craftsmen: A sculptor in stone; An engraver; An easel painter; An astronomer; A house painter; and A carver of wood by Claude-Louis Desrais was auctioned at Christies in London in December 2005, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 1,800.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at GBP 5,400.00 (€ 7,837.80). Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Claude-Louis Desrais; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Monsieur Mesmer'S Baquet sold at auction in January 2012 with the realized price of USD 15,000.00 (€ 11,491.61).
