Plate 38 bound at front, coloured engraved title, 36 coloured aquatints by Reeve, Fielding, Hunt, Bentley, Pyall, Hughes, and Edge, after Grindlay, Westall, Stanfeld, Roberts, Purser, Witherington, Fielding and Daniell, and coloured by J.B. Hogarth. (Lacking lithographic title to volume II.) Contemporary half morocco, spine gilt, gilt edges (corners bumped, some light rubbing to spine and joints, a few small areas of loss).
A FINE COPY OF ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COLOUR PLATE BOOKS ON INDIA. The subjects include scenes and views of Bombay, Golconda, Ellora and Guzerat. Grindlay, founder of the ANZ Grindlays Bank, came to India in 1803, worked with the East India Company and served with the Seventh Bombay Native Infantry from 1804-1820. It is rare in such works for the name of the colourist, in this case J.B. Hogarth, to be given. Scenery was issued in six parts between 1826 and 1830, at a cost of £2. 2s. each.
