Pen and brown ink and wash;
inscribed in brown ink, by each figure: Nijkodemus and Muijselaer / den pijper / Muijselaer;
pasted to an album page; bears a long inscription in Italian in the margin, attributing the drawing to Callot, and giving a biography of that artist, inscribed with a poem in English, in the same hand, on the reverse of the sheet

In July 2016 Sothebys in London held the auction Old Master and British Works on Paper Including drawings from the Oppé Collection, which included the work Two Characters From Popular Theatre: 'Nijkodemus' And 'Muyselaer The Piper' by Andries Both. The result of GBP 3,000.00 (€ 3,564.65) was exactly at the lower end of the estimate range of GBP 3,000.00 – 5,000.00. Admittedly, works by Andries Both have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work The Adoration Of The Shepherds in July 2001 with an auction result of GBP 14,100.00 (€ 22,960.83).
Zuschlag beim unteren Schätzpreis
Im Juli 2016 führte Sothebys in London die Auktion Old Master and British Works on Paper Including drawings from the Oppé Collection durch, in der auch die Arbeit Two Characters From Popular Theatre: 'Nijkodemus' And 'Muyselaer The Piper' von Andries Both zur Versteigerung kam. Das dabei erzielte Ergebnis von GBP 3.000,00 (€ 3.564,65) entsprach exakt dem unteren Ende der Schätzpreisspanne von GBP 3.000,00 – 5.000,00. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Andries Both auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit The Adoration Of The Shepherds im Juli 2001 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 14.100,00 (€ 22.960,83).
