engraving with drypoint, early 1470s, on laid paper, watermark Small Circle (Martineau 1; similar to Briquet 2925-7), a later impression of this rare and important engraving, probably printed in France around 1540, an unusually large sheet for this print, showing the irregular, curved platemark at the sides and partially below, trimmed into the platemark but well outside the subject above, some pale foxing, a tiny paper loss at the upper sheet edge, otherwise in very good condition

Auction result well in line with expectations
In December 2014 Christies in London held the auction Old Master Prints, which included the work A Bacchanal With Silenus (B. 20; Hind 3; Martineau 75) by Andrea Mantegna. It changed hands for a price of GBP 6,875.00 (€ 8,850.40) achieving a result in the upper range of the estimate price range of GBP 5,000.00 – 7,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Andrea Mantegna achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work The Triumph Of Alexandria in January 2020 with an auction result of USD 11,654,000.00 (€ 10,505,724.33).
Auktionsergebnis im Rahmen der Erwartungen
Im Dezember 2014 führte Christies in London die Auktion Old Master Prints durch, in der auch die Arbeit A Bacchanal With Silenus (B. 20; Hind 3; Martineau 75) von Andrea Mantegna zur Versteigerung kam. Dabei wechselte sie für einen Preis von GBP 6.875,00 (€ 8.850,40) den Besitzer und erzielte damit ein Ergebnis im oberen Bereich der Schätzpreisspanne von GBP 5.000,00 – 7.000,00. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Andrea Mantegna erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit The Triumph Of Alexandria im Januar 2020 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 11.654.000,00 (€ 10.505.724,33).
