etching, circa 1647-53, on laid paper, without watermark, a very fine impression of the rare third/ fourth state (of seven), printing with a light plate tone and a tiny touch of burr on the ramp to the bridge at left, just beginning to show a little wear at lower left, with small margins, in very good condition

This artwork by Adriaen van Ostade achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in July last year. In the Old Master and British Works on Paper: Drawings, Watercolours and Prints 1500-1900 auction, the work The Anglers sold for GBP 17,640.00 (€ 21,065.29) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 10,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Adriaen van Ostade achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work De Drinker: Three boors drinking and smoking in a spirit house in December 2002 with an auction result of GBP 1,051,650.00 (€ 1,614,335.41).
Oberer Schätzpreis um 76 % übertroffen
Dieses Kunstwerk von Adriaen van Ostade erzielte im Juli letzten Jahres bei Christies in London einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion Old Master and British Works on Paper: Drawings, Watercolours and Prints 1500-1900 wurde die Arbeit The Anglers für GBP 17.640,00 (€ 21.065,29) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von GBP 10.000,00. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Adriaen van Ostade erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit De Drinker: Three boors drinking and smoking in a spirit house im Dezember 2002 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 1.051.650,00 (€ 1.614.335,41).
