The Artist

Ria Groenhof in her studio

In Groenhof's work, the play in the ambivalent area between figuration and abstraction knows numerous variations. Sometimes the recognizable form has almost completely disappeared, while in other works it is obviously in the foreground. In any case, however, Groenhof uses a consistent grammar in her formal language, which lends her works a concise recognition value. Thus her work is always based on a basic structure of prismatic surfaces and sharp angles, from which the sculpture or painting develops. Thereby it always remains open whether the basic structure is derived from the reduction of a concrete form, or vice versa the concrete form grows out of the abstract elements.

Artist Statement

As a visual artist, I feel honored to share my work with all of you. My approach to geometricabstract art revolves around creating space and clarity.

In my paintings, you can immediately see the meticulous construction of geometric lines and shapes. I strive for a subtle balance between figuration and abstraction, giving my works an energetic and dynamic presence. The fundamental structure of prismatic planes and sharp angles forms the core of my art. I find it immensely fascinating how these elements can be used to create visual depth and complexity.

Expanding my artworks into public spaces is an essential part of my artistic vision. By combining geometric-abstract images with various materials such as bronze, concrete, stone, corten steel, and stainless steel, I can bring my vision to a larger scale. It is truly wonderful to witness how my works transform the environment and engage in dialogue with the space and the audience in the Northern provinces.

What makes my art unique is its ability to provoke reflection and introspection. My compositions challenge and raise questions about the relationship between form, space, and abstraction. I eagerly dive into this realm where I explore the boundaries of perception and understanding.

As an artist, my mission is to leave a lasting impression. I aim to bring geometric forms to life and offer inspiration through careful attention to spatial organization. For me, art is not only meant to be aesthetically pleasing but also to ask questions, provide new perspectives, and transform our perception of the world.

My work serves as a reminder that art has the power to prompt reflection on the complexity and beauty of the world around us. It is a constant testament to the magic of geometric abstraction and clear constructions.

I am thrilled to embark on this project and further develop my conceptual text. Thank you all for your interest in my art.
