Dynamic Forms and Abstract Shapes
Ria Groenhof is sculptor, painter and teacher. She lives and works in Lemmer, Netherlands and is known for her monumental commissioned works in public spaces and for companies. In addition, she also makes smaller works and works with other durable materials besides steel.
Dynamic forms are characteristic of Groenhof's spatial works. Her sculptures are often formed by two intersecting movements. Lines cross each other, both in plane and in space, creating a repetition of sharp angles over and over again. The plane seems to be broken up into a pattern of fragmented shapes. The abstraction of a purely geometric play of lines suddenly becomes a recognizable representation. This formal language also characterizes her paintings. Here, space comes into play in a complex layering of overlapping and intersecting color patterns - the third dimension is not artificially created, but made visible in a natural way.
