The artist Joan Mitchell

  • US-American Abstract Expressionist painter.
  • Spent most of her career in Paris.
  • One of the few female painters of her generation to be recognised during her lifetime.

In 1959, the American painter Joan Mitchell moved to Paris, where she envisioned a better life for herself as an artist. Here, the scene did not expect new exhibitions every year, but appreciated the patient work on new works. Mitchell was born in Chicago on 12 February 1925. After graduating from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1950, she moved to New York. Initially she painted in Cubist and Impressionist styles before discovering Abstract Expressionism, which was still in its infancy.

In 1951, she participated for the first time in an exhibition that also featured works by Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning and Lee Krasner. Mitchell's works attracted attention because of their poetics, and her first solo exhibition in New York followed a year later. Along with Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler and Shirley Jaffe, Mitchell was one of the few painters of her generation to be successful and critically acclaimed as an artist during her lifetime.

From the mid-1950s, Mitchell travelled more frequently to Paris, which she had first visited on a scholarship in 1948. In 1959, she moved her centre of life there for good. In the years that followed, she moved away from more cheerful colours, moving instead towards dark tones and a large-scale application of paint that she described as »violent and angry«. In a period of reorientation, Mitchell bought a property for herself and her 13 dogs in the village of Giverny northwest of Paris − where Claude Monet once lived and produced the famous Water Lilies paintings. The landscape of the region had a considerable influence on Mitchell's abstract painting.

Many more exhibitions followed in the 1970s and 80s, especially in Paris and New York. The Musée d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris was the first US artist to dedicate a solo exhibition to her. Participations in important biennials in Venice (1958), São Paulo (1959, 1994), the Whitney Biennial in New York (1983) and documenta 2 (1959) complete her successful career. Mitchell died on 30 October 1992 of lung cancer, which had been diagnosed only a few weeks earlier.

Februar 1925 in Chicago geboren.
