Artwork auctioned at four times the upper estimate price
The work Portrait of a lady, bust-length, in a black dress with a reticella lace neckline and a cartwheel ruff, with a pearl necklace and earrings, in a feigned oval by William Larkin was worth GBP 266,500.00 (€ 316,659.65) to a buyer in July 2016. This price was achieved in the auction Old Master and British Paintings Evening Sale at Christies in London and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of GBP 60,000.00 many times over. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by William Larkin - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of lady, probably Lady Thornhagh, three-quarter-length, in an embroidered bodice and an embroidered dress, with a pale yellow lace collar, and a blue and red mantle over her left shoulder, beside a table, flanked by draped curtains, which sold at auction in July 2008 for GBP 505,250.00 (€ 641,925.81).
