Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Silver platters with grapes, pears, plums, melons and bread rolls, a silver tazza and ewer, a basket with fruits, a gilt cup and cover, a lobster, and a roemer on a partially draped table with a curtain in the background by Wouter Mertens was auctioned at Christies in New York in January 2024. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of USD 80,000.00 – 120,000.00, the actual price achieved of USD 88,200.00 (€ 77,084.43) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Wouter Mertens - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Grapes, pears, quinces, peaches, prawns, oysters and a pastry on pewter plates with lemons, an orange, an upturned silver tazza, a roemer in a gilt stand, a silver-gilt cup and cover, a silver jug, a saltcellar, grapes, a melon and peaches in a drape, which sold at auction in December 2001
