Victor Vasarely schreibt in einem Brief im September 1969 an Eva Stünke, dass diese große Collage auf Hartfaserplatte, sich in ihrer Schönheit dadurch auszeichnet, dass die (farblichen) Abstufungsfelder darauf vollständig aufeinander abgestimmt sind: "Le collage fait 200 x200 cm et il est plus beau que la toile, car les gammes sont intégralement développées dessus." Seit seiner Kindheit ist Victor Vasarely von optischen Phänomenen des Alltags fasziniert, die Tiefeneffekte oder dynamische Strukturen hervorrufen - etwa die vielfältigen Spiegelungen von mehrfach verglasten Fenstern. Seine Intention als Künstler ist es, diesen Phänomenen nachzuspüren und sie mit Hilfe von seriellen Strukturen selbst zu erschaffen. Dafür entwickelt er sein sogenanntes Alphabet aus geometrischen Grundformen, die sich in Rastern beliebig kombinieren lassen.
„Bei meinen Einheiten aber entsteht die Struktur aus dem Spiel von Grund und Form. Die Gesamtheit meiner binären plastischen Einheiten bildet mein Alphabet. […] Anfänglich bestand die plastische Einheit aus schwarzen Formen auf weißem Grund oder weißen Formen auf schwarzem Grund, so dass entweder ihr Kern, die Form, positiv auf negativem Grund war oder umgekehrt. Mit der Einführung der Farbe aber und ihrer verschiedenen Tonleitern wurde die Anzahl der Kombinationsmöglichkeiten schwindelerregend hoch. […] Meine plastischen Einheiten sind wie Druck-Lettern in Sortierkästen untergebracht, sie sind Form-Farben und stellen das sicherste und schnellste Mittel meiner auf Millimeterpapier aufgezeichneten Programme dar. „Zoeld-D-SZ“ zeigt meisterhaft, welche faszinierenden optischen Wirkungen mit diesen Mitteln hervorgerufen werden. Allein durch die Kombination der verwendeten Quadrat- und Kreisformen wird eine optische Zweiteilung der Bildfläche erzeugt. Die zur Mitte hin intensiver werdenden Gelbtöne bewirken einen sogartigen Effekt und erleuchten das Bildzentrum wie eine integrierte Lichtquelle.
