Artwork auctioned at 12 times the upper estimate price
The work Cherry-blossom Viewing on the Hill of the Tenjin Shrine in Yasui (Yasui Tenjinyama hanami) by Utagawa Hiroshige was worth GBP 12,600.00 (€ 14,660.39) to a buyer in May 2021. This price was achieved in the auction Japanese Woodblock Prints | Including the Sokolov Collection at Sothebys in London and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of GBP 1,000.00 many times over. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Utagawa Hiroshige achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Tokaido gojusan tsugi no uchi (The fifty-three stations of the Tokaido) in September 2002 with an auction result of USD 207,500.00 (€ 210,041.50).
