London: Thomas M'Lean, 1818 [one text-leaf watermarked 1811, other text-leaves 1817, plates watermarked 1818]. 4° (360 x 251mm). Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece portrait of Antonaki Ramadani, additional aquatint title vignette and 29 plates. (Some light staining and offsetting of plates to text). Contemporary dark-blue straight-grained morocco decorated in gilt and blind, gilt edges (upper cover detached, lower joint splitting, extremities rubbed, head- and tailcaps heavily). A top price for Thomas Charles Wageman - as previously expected
The work Unknown by Thomas Charles Wageman was sold in the Travel, Science & Natural History auction at Christies in London in April 2014. The auction ended at the price of GBP 1,000.00 (€ 1,217.23), which exactly corresponded to the upper end of the estimated price range of GBP 700.00 – 1,000.00. Even if this result could not surprise positively, Unknown is the most expensive artwork by Thomas Charles Wageman that we have observed at auctions so far.
