Artwork auctioned at five times the upper estimate price

When the work Poppy, 1988 by Robert Mapplethorpe was auctioned at Christies in New York in October 2005, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - USD 50,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than five times as high at USD 251,200.00 (€ 209,420.59). However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Robert Mapplethorpe - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Self-Portrait, which sold at auction in October 2017 for GBP 548,750.00 (€ 625,682.41).

Kunstwerk zum Fünffachen des oberen Schätzpreises versteigert

Als die Arbeit Poppy, 1988 von Robert Mapplethorpe im Oktober 2005 bei Christies in New York versteigert wurde, übertraf das Ergebnis die Erwartungen um ein Vielfaches. Der obere Schätzpreis war mit – rückwirkend betrachtet recht bescheidenen – USD 50.000,00 angesetzt, der tatsächlich erzielte Preis hingegen war mit USD 251.200,00 (€ 209.420,59) mehr als fünfmal so hoch. Für andere Arbeiten von Robert Mapplethorpe mussten die Käufer allerdings auch schon deutlich tiefer in die Tasche greifen – das bisher höchste Auktionsergebnis haben wir für die Arbeit Self-Portrait beobachtet, die im Oktober 2017 für GBP 548.750,00 (€ 625.682,41) versteigert wurde.
