Auction result well in line with expectations
In November 2005 Christies in London held the auction Portrait Miniatures, Objects of Vertu, Selected Silver, and, which included the work A gentleman in gold-bordered blue coat and waistcoat, lace cravat and powdered wig en queue by Penelope Carwardine. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 200.00 – 300.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 216.00 (€ 317.33) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Penelope Carwardine - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work A young lady, in a low-cut blue dress with a lace collar, pearl choker flowers in her powdered upswept hair, which sold at auction in May 2004 for GBP 537.75 (€ 806.82).
