Description
MARCO BOSCHINI (1613-1678)
L'Arcipelago con tutte le Isole, Scogli Secche, e Bassi Fondi, con i mari, golfi, seni, citta', e castelli. Venice: Francesco Nicolini, 1658. 4° (230 x 170mm). Etched plate with the Farnese arms, 49 etched maps, three of these folding, the others full-page in the text. (Lacking the half-title, short worm track in title and Farnese plate, the latter with shorter margins probably as issued, the large folding map with an expertly repaired tear, the last map laid-down with slight loss to the lower outside corner, light mostly marginal soiling and spotting.) Modern quarter vellum.
FIRST EDITION of this handsome atlas of nearly all the islands of the Greek archipelago. Boschini's isolario is an important antecedent for the works of Piacenza, Dapper and Coronelli (whose copy was sold at Christie's, New York, 18 November 1988, lot 39). Blackmer 172.
