Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Jockey Uniform and Man with Binoculars at the Finish Line: A Double-Sided Work by Lee Townsend was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in March 2021, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 2,000.00 – 3,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 882.00 (€ 751.09). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Lee Townsend achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work The Bookies in September 2020 with an auction result of USD 16,380.00 (€ 13,978.49).
